eLifeLink partnered with RoofAbove, a nonprofit organization working to end homelessness in Charlotte, to distribute sleeping bags to homeless people living in the streets and tents in uptown Charlotte. RoofAbove is a new name given to the newly merged Urban Ministry Center and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte. Arya Pradhan of eLifeLink handed over eighteen sleeping bags to the Chief Engagement Officer Mr. Randall Hitt on November 25, 2020 a day before the Thanksgiving! Ms. Hannah Stutts, the Street Outreach Coordinator, will be instrumental in distributing the sleeping bags based on individual needs assessment to ensure they are handed out to the most needy.
With the temperatures dropping below zero with the onset of the fall season there is increased chance of catching flu and coronavirus, especially for this vulnerable community. The sleeping bags will undoubtedly help them to stay warm during the freezing temperatures, making them less likely to catch cold, get sick or need hospitalization. This is especially important during the rising pandemic where the number of hospitalizations are almost at a breaking point. Although this is a very small contribution it could very well save lives during this wintertime. eLifelink is planning to donate more sleeping bags later in the Christmas time if there is more demand it.
Fact: There are currently more than 11,448 homeless in North Carolina, and about 1,500 in Mecklenburg County, of which10% are chronically homeless.
